Finding Home

Photographic studies of Humboldt County California

Arriving in the summer of 2014, I didn’t expect to stay longer than a short visit, but something kept me here.

Growing up in “rural” southern New Jersey, I spent my mid and late twenties alternating between Wilderness and Urbanism. 5 months on the Appalachian trail, then a season in Philadelphia, a Wilderness trail crew in Oregon, a winter back east, a season of solitude in Washington’w Glacier Peak Wilderness, the next summer an apprenticeship in Chicago and a move to Portland, OR in the fall. After the better part of a decade of short stints and new experiences everywhere felt like home, but also nowhere felt like home. Sometime in 2018 I realized the photo’s I had been making since 2014 documented my process of learning a place, understanding it, and it taking on the intangible quality of “home” in my psyche.
